What I have heard about heart disease is that it is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. More importantly, heart disease is a condition that affects people’s blood vessels. From what I learned about heart disease is that it can occur in many ways. Heart Disease can happen when the movement of oxygen in the blood vessels is blocked. Examples of this could be caused by cholesterol or fat buildup. At first, I knew that certain groups of people were affected by heart disease but didn’t know what especially. When looking at certain social classes, heart disease is very high in low-income areas compared to high-income areas. This is something that also affects Long Island. I’ve heard things about heart disease rates being high in low incomes from TikTok and Podcast and Youtube. When thinking about why Heart Disease is very prevalent in the lower social class, I think it has to do with the expensive housing on Long Island. Certain areas of Long Island like Old Westbury are in a high social class when compared to a town like Hempstead which is a lower income area. Expensive housing may be the cause of why heart disease is prevalent depending on social class. People in these high-housing areas may be able to afford good health care for themselves while others in lower-income areas can’t. Other factors play a role in why some people can’t afford good health care like lifestyle or other things beyond individual control. From what I have heard is that heart disease can occur due to things like being overly stressed, lack of sleep, rate of income, urbanization, etc. These things occur daily but if many of these factors play in your everyday life, there could be a chance that you can get heart disease. When it comes to trying to take care of people who have heart disease, some people need medications, surgery, or even a lifestyle change. To go more into detail, some people can try to change their diet like eating more fruits and vegetables, going to the gym for exercise, and many try to meditate to deal with stress. Adding these things into your lifestyle can decrease the chance of getting heart disease and cause you as an individual to feel happy about yourself. Sometimes not everyone can do that because of their source of income. People who may have heart disease can treat it because of their health care and source of income which lowers the rate of people who have heart disease in high-income areas. Other individuals won’t be able to afford that lifestyle change which can lead people to live with heart disease for the rest of their lives.
